Archetype Kubera is the king of a unique kind of supernatural beings called Yakshas. Kubera is the son of sage Vishrava, who is the son of Lord Brahma. The sage had two wives, the second wife was a demon and gave birth to demons like Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Vibhisana (Ravana is mentioned in the epic Ramayana as the king of Lanka who captures Sita and against whom Lord Rama proceeds to fight a battle to regain his wife.)
When Kubera began ruling over Lanka, Ravana’s mother could not be satisfied to see his sons under Kubera’s rule because Kubera was God and her sons were demons. She instigated her sons not to live in harmony with the Gods. Instead she wanted them to fight the Gods for power and supremacy. So, Ravana left the palace to do penance and pray to Shiva. When he pleased Shiva, he took a boon from the lord that he would grow in power and rule over Lanka. After becoming invincible due to the boon from Shiva, Ravana dethroned Kubera and drove him out of his kingdom.
Kubera, sought the advice from his grandfather Pulastya and also performed severe penance and prayed to Shiva. Eventually, Lord Shiva appeared before Kubera and elevated him to the stature of God of Wealth.
