Mythology Behind Archetype Durga

Once a demon king Mahishasura received a boon from Lord Shiva that he cannot be killed by any man or deity. The boon from Shiva made him arrogant and he began to attack even the Gods and tried to banish them from heaven.

The Gods approached Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva to save them from the tyranny of the demons. All the Gods, along with the Trinity, got together and with their combined force created a feminine form to kill Mahishasura. A beautiful yet a fierce warrior goddess Durga with ten hands emerged. The Gods endowed her with divine weapons created out of their energy.

The warrior Goddess, riding on a lion, vanquished the army of demons sent by Mahishasura. Then she approached her enemy. Mahishasura appeared in various forms to confuse and shake her confidence. The Goddess also incarnated in multiple forms to overpower her enemy, finally exterminating him on the 10th waxing phase of Moon of September-October (month of Ashwin). She grasped his head and pierced his body with her trident and beheaded him. Thereafter, Goddess Durga was called Mahishasura Mardini (slayer of Mahishasura).
