The Sudarshana chakra was presented to Vishnu by Shiva. Once when the demons were out to destroy heaven, the Gods sought the advice of Vishnu. Vishnu went to seek Shiva’s advice but found him in deep meditation. So he waited earnestly for years and meditated on Shiva by offering him one thousand lotuses every day and while offering each lotus he chanted Shiva’s name. After a long time, when Shiva came out of his trance he realized that Vishnu had been worshipping him for a special boon. So, one day he stole one of the lotus flowers and while Vishnu began to chant Shiva’s name and offer thousand flowers, he found he had 999 flowers. To complete his worship, Vishnu plucked one of his eyes and offered it to Shiva in the place of the missing lotus. Shiva was so pleased with Vishnu’s devotion that he instantly appeared before him to grant him his boon.
Shiva appeared before Vishnu and told him that he will grant any wish that Vishnu would ask for. Vishnu asked him for a weapon with which he can exterminate the demons. Shiva gifted him the powerful disc-shaped weapon known as Sudarshana chakra. This is a weapon with consciousness. When it is sent on a mission to exterminate all evildoers, it does not stop till it accomplishes the orders of its master, and then returns to him.
