Mythology behind Archetype Mercury

According to the Linga Purana, Mercury or Budha is the son of Moon and his wife Rohini. However, there is a mention in several Puranas (sacred texts) such as Vishnu Purana, Brahma Purana, Devi Bhagavata Bhagawat Purana, Padma Purana and Vayu Purana, that Mercury was born to Moon and Tara, wife of Brihaspati.

One of the initial mentions of Budha (Mercury) as a celestial body appears in the Vedic text Pancavimsa Brahmana, and also in other sacred texts such as the Shatapatha Brahmana. Mercury is cold, neutral and moist planet with quick-changing nature. Its impact is seen in a person based on its placement in a sign and the house. As Mercury is close to the Sun, it is often observed restless, indecisive and retrograde in nature.

Mercury or Budha is the smallest planet of the solar system and can be seen in the morning and evening as a shining star. Being neutral and adaptable, it exerts malefic effects in conjunct with Mars and turns the natives tense, over-excited and apprehensive.
