Ganesha was born to Shiva and Parvati. Once Parvati was having bath when Lord Shiva came to visit her but she did not approve of his intrusion to her privacy. So, next time when she wanted to have bath she created her son from her own body and instructed him to keep guard and allow no one to meet her while she is having bath. Meanwhile, Lord Shiva came by to visit his wife, Parvati. Ganesha refused to allow him to meet Parvati. This attitude enraged Shiva and he sent his Ganas against him. But the boy stood steadfast in his duty and Ganas could not overpower him. Even Brahma came to help but the boy refused to listen to him too. Thereby, Shiva arrived himself and a fierce fight began between him and Parvati’s boy. He beheaded the boy out of anger and found access to Parvati. When Parvati received the message of her son’s death, she became furious and out of her rage, she manifested an army of fierce Goddesses whom she sent to torment all the Gods and saints.
Under such a grave situation, the Gods approached Shiva to bring life in Parvati’s son. Shiva advised them to behead the first animal they find on their way and attach its head to the body of the boy. After they followed his instruction and beheaded an elephant and attached it to the boy, Shiva gave him life and revived their son. Thereafter, their son Ganesha had an elephant head.
