Introduction to Pancha Mahabhootas, the Five Prime Elements

There are five basic elements of nature, which have remained as the essential constituents of every portion and aspect of the universe. The great function of creation takes place only with the help of these elements, and so is destruction. Among these two all-important functions, all lives thrive and grow. It is once again only these elements, which provide all the required energies for the nourishment of the beings on earth in the form of air, sunlight, water, heat, sound, etc.

Pancha Mahabhootas

These elements of nature are the Earth, Water, Wind or Air, Fire, and the Sky or Space, and are known as the Pancha Mahabhootas or the Pancha Bhootas. The five grand temples dedicated to Lord Shiva have been erected to highlight the significance of each of the five elements. These Shiva temples are - the Ekambareshwarar temple at Kanchipuram representing Earth; the Jambukeshwarar temple at Tiruvanaikkaval, Trichy, representing Water; Kalahastiswarar temple at Kalahasti representing Air; Arunachaleshwarar temple at Thiruvannamalai representing Fire; and Natarajar temple at Chidambaram representing Sky. These are known as the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and are regarded as extremely holy.

While the body of any living being too is created out of these elements and also gets absorbed back in them after life ends, it is believed that these reside in and control the various parts of the body. It is the Earth, which controls the knees; Water - the feet; Air - the navel; Fire - the shoulders; and Sky - the brain. Among the fingers of the hand too, the index finger, little finger, thumb, middle finger, and the ring finger are said to represent these elements, respectively.

These elements are also energy bodies that pervade all places, including the human body. Wherever they are, these energies need to be in perfect balance. Any imbalance in their presence can cause many kinds of disturbances. In case of nature, these may manifest in the form of calamities like storms, floods, earthquakes, and eruption of volcanoes, while in human systems, these may show as mental and physical ill health, and stress.

What Vastu means to Balance the Five Elements?

Any construction is done only with the help of building materials, and these too need to be in balance for the structure to be stable and live its life with purpose. Also, these element-energies which are part of the structures keep impacting the magnetic forces present in the human bodies, and these can influence the lives of the people living and working there, in many ways. The issues that arise may be in the domains of health, finance, relationships, success in endeavors, progress in life, social status and overall peace.

Vastu Shastra can play a crucial role in balancing the Pancha Bhoota energies that exist in buildings and in ensuring that their influence on the human beings living or working there always remains positive so that they can have a life of fulfillment.
