Why Bhagavad Gita?

Anegudde Vinayaka

Bhagavad Gita teaches how humanity or every living soul suffers from the miseries of the world. It explains how everyone is tied to their karma and how one can find an end to the cycle of life and death and reach the abode of the almighty.

The sacred book teaches us how one can feel detached from the pain and sufferings of the world and understand himself as a soul. It guides us toward the path of enlightenment and makes us understand the power of the Supreme. One who has read Bhagavad Gita has automatically read all the Vedas; such powerful knowledge is there in the book.

Also, there is a misconception that Bhagavad Gita is the book of Hindus and should only be read by them. However, the book shares the universal teachings which are common to every living being on Earth. It is not a religious scripture but a source of knowledge that teaches a soul and not a human being of a specific religion or caste.

What does Bhagavad Gita Contain?

Bhagavad Gita is the knowledge shared by Shri Krishna to only his staunch devotee Arjuna. The discussion happens during Mahabharata when Arjun is bound to kill the opponents, which are his brothers, his relatives, his Gurus, and his several relations. The war mainly happens between Kaurava and Pandavas.

Before attacking his family, Arjuna describes his misery to Krishna and how he can’t kill his own family to get the throne. Krishna, his charioteer, shares the reality with Arjuna; he shares the ultimate Gyan with Arjun to enlighten him.

Krishna, tell Arjun how he is bound to do his duty as a warrior. He reveals the great plan of the almighty that how this war is written to happen, and how it would be an example to the coming generations. Krishna educates Arjuna on the difference between body and soul and how a soul is immortal. He explains that his relatives and the opponents are already dead and are already in the mouth of Kaal (death). He explains that Arjun is only the mediator or the doer; everyone is already dead because of their karmas.

Krishna explains how everyone is bound to take birth because of their karmas. He explains the significance of Yoga and how one can find God by doing these Yogas. Finally, Krishna explains how one can attain Moksha and never take birth in this fragile world.

In the end, to give Arjuna the ultimate enlightenment, Krishna comes in his real form. In Krishna’s real form, Arjuna sees thousands of galaxies, all the sun, moon, and stars, all the creatures of the universe, and fire swallowing all the creatures of the universe at the end of the universe eon. Seeing the huge, beautiful, and scary form of Krishna, Arjun goes into a deep silence; he couldn’t utter a word. He couldn’t believe his eyes, and then Krishna, to relieve Arjuna again, comes in his casual avatar.
