Why Lakshmi Kubera Homa is conducted on Aadi Perukku?April 12, 2019
Lakshmi and Kubera
Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. She is the universal mother and the supreme feminine power. She is also the divine consort of Lord Vishnu, the God of protection and preservation.
Kubera is known variously as the Lord of the riches, owner of great treasurers, and even as the banker of the Gods or the heavenly beings. He is depicted as fully adorned with precious jewels, carrying a pot of money.
Lakshmi and Kubera can together wipe out poverty from life and fill it with immense wealth and material benefits.
Aadi Perukku is the monsoon festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August). This marks the advent of the rains, when nature’s bounty comes in the form of heavy water flow in the rivers, making the fields fertile and ready for cultivation. This period, hence, is held as highly suitable for starting agricultural activities. Aadi Perukku is observed on the 18th of the month. The Tamil word ‘Perukku’ means copious flow, and hence, this festival is also called as ‘Pathinettaam Perukku,’ the generous flow of Aadi 18th. This also symbolizes the flow of prosperity and abundance into the lives of the people.
Aadi itself is a very auspicious month when the worship of Goddesses is undertaken with enthusiasm. It is believed that Lakshmi becomes joyful and generous during Aadi Perukku, can be easily pleased by the devotees, and that her blessings are available in great measures during this time. Hence, Aadi Perukku is considered a highly favorable time for seeking divine favors in the form of wealth, success and well-being, and that the Goddess can bless people with a variety of rewards like progeny, education, courage, good health and wealth.
As per a legend, this day also marks the occurrence of another memorable event. In deference to the wishes of Goddess Gomathi, an aspect of Devi Parvathi, both the supreme Gods Shiva and Vishnu appeared in a unified form as Sankara Narayana in the holy place called Sankaran Koil. This Lord and the Goddess can be worshipped in that place even today. Hence, Aadi Perukku is considered the right day for the fulfillment of desires through divine intervention.
