Legend of Goddess Annapoorneshwari

According to legends, Shiva and Parvati had a disagreement over the nature of the world. Shiva, the omniscient observer of the world, argued that the material world was merely Maya (illusion), including the food people eat. Parvati, the force behind growth, transformation and catering to the material needs of the world, disagreed.

This created a rift between the Divine couple, and Parvati left. At her departure, the world was enveloped in scarcity. Rivers shrank, crops withered, and famine spread far and wide. Shiva himself felt her absence profoundly and realized that the material world could not be easily dismissed.

The compassionate Parvati returned as Goddess Annapoorneshwari with a vessel of food and a ladle and began to feed the hungry, including Shiva himself who took the form of a beggar, and restored fertility to the earth and nourishment to mankind.

Legend of Mother Goddess Kaveri

The Brahmavaivarta Puranam explains the meaning of the word Kaveri. Ka stands for ‘decimation of sins,’ Ve stands for ‘bestowal of desires,’ and Ri stands for ‘salvation.’ According to Aadi Perukku legends, the River Kaveri, the physical form of Mother Goddess Kaveri, swells with life-giving water during Aadi month. This helps enhance the fertility of the land to produce an abundant harvest that nourishes our body and also helps wash away all our sins, purifying our mind and soul.
