Akshaya Tritiya or ‘Akha Teej’ is on the third day in the Hindu month of Vaishakha (May – June). Akshaya Tritiya’s meaning is ‘that which is inexhaustible or something that cannot be destroyed’. It is considered a very auspicious day for new beginnings and is important for both Hindus and Jains.
Parshurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was supposedly born on this day. Sage Veda Vyasa is said to have begun writing the Mahabharata with the help of Ganesha on this very day. It is also said that Satya Yuga ended, and Treta Yuga started on this day. It is a good day for all auspicious ceremonies, especially marriage, thread ceremony, inauguration, and for making any donation. Anything that is started on Akshaya Tritiya day is said to bring great luck and prosperity. The deeds done today are believed to be 1000 times more powerful than on other days. Therefore, this day is chosen for marriages, starting a new business, and also for making donations. It is said that Akshaya Tritiya 2021 marriages are long-lasting and successful always, and hence it makes for an ideal wedding date. Many people make donations on this day. Some even offer Tarpanam to ancestors.
