Vastu for Bedroom Furniture

Vastu Shastra, generally known as Vastu, is the ancient Indian system of construction. Literally meaning 'the science of architecture,' Vastu describes the principles of construction, which include layouts, designs, measurements, and space arrangements. This traditional system aims to blend architecture with nature through geometrical patterns, symmetry, and alignments.
Bedroom and Vastu
The bedroom can be termed as a sanctuary for rest, relaxation, repose, and rejuvenation. It is where one takes refuge, especially at night, to unwind and recoup after the Day's hard physical and mental struggles to overcome the various challenges of daily life. Hence, Vastu attaches a lot of significance to this ultimate place of rest for any Day and lays down principles for furniture arrangements so that there is a free flow of positive energy, contributing to an environment of health and peace.
Here, let us learn some simple guidelines that Vastu recommends regarding the positioning and direction of the various furniture in the bedroom, such as the bed, wardrobe, dressing table, etc.
Bed- Where to Place and in Which Direction?
The most important fixture in a bedroom is undoubtedly the bed. According to Vastu, the best place for the bed is the southwest portion or corner of the bedroom. Traditional beliefs hold that the southwest denotes strength and stability, which can promote restful sleep and help bring balance to life.
Another equally significant factor is the direction in which people keep their heads while sleeping. It is ideal to point the head towards the southern or eastern direction. This orientation can align with the earth's magnetic field and enhance the depth and quality of sleep.
On the other hand, if we sleep with our heads to the north, the direction's magnetic pull can attract iron, which can accumulate in the brain and cause headaches. Head-to-the-north can also disrupt blood circulation and disturb sleep. Hence, even scientifically, the north is a strict 'no' for sleep.
Similarly, Vastu is against placing the bed right under the beam in the roof or in front of the door, as these could cause stress and obstruct the circulation of positive energy.
Wardrobe Placement
It is beneficial to place or fix the wardrobe in the southwest, south, or western parts of the bedroom. Such a positioning signifies heaviness and, hence, stability and can help ground the energy well in the room. Also, it will be good for the wardrobe doors to open towards the northern or eastern directions; that can help ease positive energy flow.
Positioning of Dressing Table
Many find it convenient to have a dressing table also in the bedroom. In that case, the recommendation is to keep it either in the north or east; the principle here is that one should face the eastern direction while using it, which is regarded as auspicious.
The mirror also assumes significance in the bedroom, especially when there is a dressing table. Vastu cautions against positioning the mirror directly opposite to the bed, as the reflection of the bed in the mirror can leave people anxious and restless. But if that is not possible, at least covering the mirror at night can help maintain serenity in the bedroom.
Other Furniture
Nightstands or Bedside Tables, similar in size and shape, can be placed on both sides of the bed to bring symmetry and balance. People can also have lamps on these, which are of similar design, height, and brightness; these can help maintain harmony.
If there is a study table in the bedroom, the northern or eastern part of the bedroom can be the right place for it. These directions signify knowledge and growth and can, hence, foster better focus and productivity.
Further, it is best to avoid electronic devices and the likes of TV, music systems, fitness equipment, and computers, in the bedroom, or at least limit them to the minimum, as they can impede peaceful energy. If unavoidable, people can have them in the southeastern corner and remember to switch them off in all respects when not in use.
These practical, easy-to-use tips can help create a serene bedroom atmosphere conducive to restful sleep and rejuvenation of the body and spirit.
