The Power of Omens Part 1 By Astrologer Ramkumar

DateFebruary 13, 2009

It is human desire to wish to know ahead of time how things will turn out. One element of Jyotish, the science of light which contains Vedic astrology, deals with predictive signs or omens. An omen is an indicator which gives a forecast as to whether an endeavor that a person is thinking about or about to perform will be successful or not.

Omens were described by many sages in classical texts. In particular, the sage Varahamihira has written extensively about this subject. Varahamihira also wrote several well-regarded astronomical canons and was highly revered as an excellent mathematician and as a gifted astrologer.Omens are a sensitive element in predictions created using Devatha Prasna (invoking deities to get predictions) and Astamangala Prasna (an integral part of traditional astrology in Kerala, India). Prasna means ‘question’ and works with the exact moment in time of petitioner’s question rather than his birthchart horoscope. So the science of omens can be used by anyone, even if they do not know their exact moment of birth. While Prasna astrology takes time to learn in detail, there are some omen sayings which may be useful as general guidelines to consider when making choices.

It is important to remember that omens do not create the effects or results. They are only indicators of what is likely to occur. Everyone has free will.

Many omens involve simple things such as a dog or other everyday happenings. If we keep our eyes alert, we may see signs that can help us with our daily path.

Some simple omen guidelines from southern India are listed below. These are not from Astamangala Prasna (those can be more complex and involve training). Many of these omen saying involve dogs, so for some people, their own pets may help play a role in giving them signals from the divine. You may wish to experiment for yourself with some of these omen sayings (notice the omen and notice the result you get) and see how well they hold up for you as guidelines.
