Pratyangira Devi – The Goddess of Power and Vigor

dateOn May 10, 2025

Pratyangira Devi is a powerful goddess and a form of the Divine Mother. She has the head of a male lion and a woman's body. This represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. Vaishnavites refer to her as Narasimhi, the female power of Narasimha. She is also Siddhilakshmi, a form of Guhya Kali. In Durga tradition, the Goddess is known as Purna Chandi. In the Vedas, she is Adharvana Bhadrakali, the ruling deity of Atharva Veda. The Pratyangira aspect of the Divine Mother remained under wraps for a long time. Pratyangira Devi destroyed the ego of Lord Sharabeshwara. She was able to pacify a ferocious Narasimha who became very aggressive after killing the demon Hiranyakashipu and calm him down when even Lord Shiva as Sharabeshwara failed to do so. pratyangira-devi-the-goddess-of-power-and-vigor Legend behind Pratyangira Devi The Markandeya and Shiva Puranas mention the Goddess. After killing Hiranyakashipu to protect his devotee, Prahlada, Lord Narasimha became very aggressive. To soothe him, Lord Shiva took the form of Sharabhaeswara, a bird-animal form. On seeing this, Narasimha took the form of Gandaberunda, a two-headed bird. Shiva then created Pratyangira Devi from his wing. Supposedly, she appeared along with thunder and lightning. On seeing her imposing figure, Lord Narasimha is said to have realized the purpose behind his Avataram and calmed down at once. Another story claims that Pratyangira Devi revealed herself to 2 sages or Rishis while they were meditating on a Moola Mantra and that she took her name from them.
