Lakshmi or Mahalakshmi is the supreme Goddess of wealth and prosperity. She also represents fertility and fortune. Lakshmi is the divine consort of Lord Vishnu, the supreme God of protection and sustenance. She is the universal mother, who is the embodiment of auspiciousness and well-being, and hence, is hailed as ‘Shri’ or ‘Sridevi’. Lakshmi is an inseparable part of Vishnu or Narayana, and together they are regarded as a single entity, Lakshmi Narayana. Though she is said to stay in Vaikunta, where Lord Vishnu resides, Lakshmi’s supreme abode remains the very heart of the Lord himself. This is the reason, the Lord himself is known as Srinivasa – Srinivasa – that is, Nivasa, the place of residence of Shri, Goddess Lakshmi.
She is believed to have emerged in all her splendor from the depths of the Divine Ocean of Milk, when it was churned by both the Devas and Asuras, having the massive mountain Meru as the center pole and the king of serpents Vasuki, as the rope. She is also said to have chosen none other than Lord Vishnu himself as her consort, there itself.
