How To Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami At Home

DateAugust 8, 2017

Krishna Jayanti or Janmashtami is the day to revere the birth of Lord Krishna and is one of the widely celebrated Hindu festivals across the country. Poojas and rituals offered to the avatar of the Supreme preserver and sustainer archetype may vary from place to place. In Northern & Western states of India, grand public festivities are held on the occasion.

Following are simple and easy rituals and practices that can be followed to worship Krishna on his birthday (Krishna Jayanthi) at home:

Perform a simple Pooja at home – Place the idol or picture of Lord Krishna on a clean altar and decorate him with garlands, turmeric, sandal paste and kumkum (red vermilion powder). Light a lamp and offer him flowers, fruits, sweets and savories. Flowers and Tulsi leaves are Krishna’s favorite. Chant Krishna hymns and offer Aarti (light offering) to the Lord. At the end of the Pooja, distribute the sweets and fruits as Prasad (sacred offering).

Make it a group Pooja – Invite your family and friends to join the pooja to add merriment to the occasion. Involve everyone from kids to elders in the decoration and rituals.

Decorate your house – You can hang small Handis (earthen pots) and colorful decorative items to adorn the house on the occasion. In South India, little foot prints made out of rice flour are drawn from the doorstep till the Pooja area, denoting the arrival of the Lord to their houses.

Dress up your little ones – Your joy knows no bound when you dress up your little ones as Krishna or Radha in cute, colorful outfits.

Offer the Lord his favorite foods – Krishna adores butter, sweets such as Ladoos, Kheer etc. Offer his favorite foods on his birthday to satiate him.

Chant Hymns & Mantra for Krishna – You can simply chant Krishna Mahamantra or any sloka/hymn in praise of the Lord using a rosary.

Read sacred texts – Indulge yourself in reading Bhagavad Gita or Bhagvadham or the stories of Krishna.

Conduct a Satsang – You can gather ladies in your neighborhood to sing bhajans and hymns for Lord Krishna and enjoy the ceremony.

Exchange little birthday gifts – You can ask your friends and family members to bring gifts for Lord Krishna and exchange among yourselves after the Pooja
