Ashtalakshmi is the form of the Divine Mother Lakshmi, in her manifestation as a group of eight Hindu Goddesses. The Goddess in these Avatars symbolizes the eight sources of wealth which governs the life of all human beings, with each individual, fulfilling certain necessities and desires. All these attributes are worshipped as a group in temples and include prosperity, good health, knowledge, strength, progeny, power, valor and victory.
Lakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and responsible for the distribution of wealth in all forms. She is endowed with all auspicious and divine qualities, taking on multiple forms to carry out certain unique tasks.
All the Avatars of the Goddess are widely worshipped by Sri Vaishnava and other Hindu communities, especially in South India. These charming manifestations of the Divine Mother are revered for the noble qualities they portray and represent the goal of life.
Lakshmi is revered as the Mother of the entire Universe and incarnates on Earth to ensure the propagation of all living beings. Thus, the Goddess assumed the eight forms known as Ashtalakshmi to fulfill the diverse needs of her devotees. The eight forms of the Goddess are: Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Sowbhagya Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Dharunya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi and Vidhya Lakshmi.
The manifestation of the Goddess in these eight forms fulfills a specific purpose and is associated with all the necessities which living beings require for the sustenance of life.
All eight forms are essential to maintain the equilibrium of material and spiritual prosperity required in the world.
Since Goddess Lakshmi is associated with wealth and prosperity, making offerings of red flowers is considered propitious. Maintaining cleanliness and lighting of lamps is also said to usher in her grace and remove darkness, ignorance & evil from our lives.
Chanting the Ashtalakshmi Stotram is also considered a sure-fire way to establish a direct connect with the Goddess.
Worshipping Ashtalakshmi is said to bestow one with success, prosperity and abundance, both material and spiritual. She is said to favor those who are dedicated and work hard to realize their dreams & ambitions. However, this should not be associated with greed and one should not call on her to further their selfish interests.
The sacred scriptures prescribe fire ceremony, Abishekam (hydration ceremony), Pooja/Archana (Light and Sound ceremony), Yantra and Mantra (special sounds) as the ways to offer your prayer to the divine.
