Mangal Dosha, the feared affliction

Mangal Dosha can be regarded as one of the feared astrological afflictions. A ‘Dosha’ is an affliction. Mangal Dosha is thus the Mars Affliction and refers to an inauspicious positioning of planet Mars in the natal chart of an individual. Mangal is planet Mars, one of the powerful Navagraha, the nine planets. Mars is believed to exercise a strong influence over the lives and fortunes of individuals.

It also remains as one of the most important aspects that people are concerned about while matching horoscopes for a marriage proposal. Mangal Dosha assumes tremendous significance in the compatibility assessment that is made between a prospective bride and groom before they are united in marriage. It is believed that if either of them suffers from Mangal Dosha that can seriously affect their marital relationship and its harmony.

Mangal Dosha Conditions

It is the position of Mars in a horoscope that draws the criteria for Mangal Dosha. A person is said to suffer from Mangal affliction or is termed a Manglik if planet Mars is placed in 1st House (Lagna or Ascendant), 4th, 7th, 8th or the 12th House from the Ascendant in the horoscope. The planet’s placement in any of those Houses counted from the Moon or Venus is also said to denote Mangal Dosha. While Mangal Dosha is an affliction that depends on the Mars’ positioning, its placement in different Houses as above may lead to different effects, though predominantly adverse.

Mangal Dosha (Mars Affliction)

Mars is a malefic planet that aspects as many as 3 Houses, the 4th, 7th and the 10th and hence its effect can be far-reaching. Here, let us analyze the impact of Mangal Dosha for different positions of Mars.

  • The 1st House represents the self itself, and hence the placement of Mars in this House can create mental illusions and make a person impulsive, short-tempered and even violent. However, there may be much traveling.
  • The 2nd House denotes immediate family and joy, and a Mars placed here may lead to poverty, stupidity, merciless attitude and strains between life partners.
  • Comfort is what is shown by the 4th House and a Mars there can give rise to disturbed family life and diseases.
  • It is the 7th House that directly represents marriage, and the presence of Mars here can lead to severe differences of opinion between husband and wife, sufferings and sorrow.
  • The 8th House represents the significant suhaagbhava, the longevity of the marriage. Mars in this House can spell danger for the long life of either of the spouses and thus, for their marital life. It can also make people dull and unlucky.
  • The 12th House denotes conjugal enjoyment and happy married life, and a Mars here can cast its shadow on the marital peace and joy, and make life miserable. People may also suffer from hostility and loss of self-esteem.
  • Exceptions to the Rule

However, not all is lost even if Mars were to be present in one of these Houses, as Astrology provides for a ‘cancellation effect.’ If both the prospective bride and the groom suffer similar Mangal Dosha; or if one is a Manglik, while the other has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in those six Houses; the adverse effects of Mangal Dosha are believed to be neutralized.
