dateOn June 05, 2025

Located atop the hills of Palani in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, is the millennia-old Palani Murugan Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. Also called the Arulmigu Dhandayudhapani Swami Temple, it is very popular among devotees of Murugan across India. There is very little evidence regarding the origins of this temple. According to some Tamil sacred texts, the idol of Murugan in this temple was created by Bhogar, a renowned Siddhar, using an amalgam of 9 poisonous substances mixed in a specific ratio. The resulting compound was called Navapaashanam, and devotees believe that it has healing properties. Due to thefts and neglect, the idol fell into disrepair. Later on, a Perumal king of the Chola Dynasty who ruled between the second and fifth AD took steps to rebuild the temple. Palani temple is one of the Arupadai (six sacred abodes) of Murugan in Tamil Nadu. It is a powerful center for spiritual healing. The shrine stands 1500 feet above sea level. Each year, millions of devotees undertake the sacred climb, called ‘Padi Vizha’, climbing around 670 steps, as an act of penance and for the purpose of spiritual purification. The climb also offers panoramic and spectacular views of the landscape around the temple. If you are planning to go on a pilgrimage to Palani Murugan temple, this article can be a great guide. They have a spiritual significance. Climbing them symbolizes the devotee’s spiritual ascent. With each step, the devotee comes closer to Murugan and sheds their earthly burdens. The steps are not hard to climb and there are handrails for support. How to Enjoy a Smooth Ascent To climb the Padikattu, one should be physically and spiritually prepared. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and smooth ascent: Ensure proper hydration: During summer, it can get very hot and you may get dehydrated. So, carry enough water to hydrate yourself. Dehydration can make you feel tired and slow your ascent. It will also spoil the overall experience. You can also carry electrolyte drinks or rehydration salts. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear: Avoid tight clothes and materials that make you feel warmer. Wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothes in light cottons. Sturdy shoes or chappals with a good grip will help you climb the steps easily and safely. Do not wear new shoes as they may cause blisters. Maintain a steady pace: Don’t be in a hurry to reach the summit. Try to climb at a steady pace. Take breaks occasionally. There are spots meant for people to rest en route to the temple. Start early: Early morning would be ideal for the climb, as you can avoid the heat. It will be cooler then, making for a more comfortable and enjoyable climb. Get medical advice: If you have any health issues, get medical advice before you attempt the climb. A doctor can suggest precautions and tell you if the climb is advisable. Prepare spiritually: Praying or meditation will help you prepare yourself mentally and spiritually. Avoid going alone: It’s better not to make the ascent alone. Having family or friends for company is safer and makes the journey more pleasant.
