The Varahi Amman Temple is located in Tiruchirapalli district, Tamil Nadu. She is one of the seven Matrikas. Matrika means the group of seven mothers or Goddesses. Sri Varahi Daasar Boopathi Swami was a staunch devotee of all the seven Goddesses, and hence he was the one who established the Temple.
The Goddess blesses everyone who comes to her door and submits their prayer. She is considered a powerful Goddess who infuses her devotees with strength and positivity. The Goddess helps people get rid of all evil eyes, accidents, and Drishti, Dosha. This way, her devotees remain shielded and away from any negative circumstances.
This Temple is believed to have been built during the Chola dynasty. As per texts, it is said that the Chola Kings were great worshippers and followers of Varahi Amman. She is a deity who is known for great grace and immense mental and physical strength. Before leaving for any war or military campaign, the Cholas offered prayers to get her blessings. When this Temple was being constructed, it is said that the Goddess appeared before her devotees and asked them not to build a roof over the shrine ever.
Thus when you visit the Temple, you will see that there is no roof over the shrine. It is also said that Amman never wanted human suffering, but due to the karmic cycles, they have to suffer. So she wished the shrine to be roofless in her place of worship until all devotees had a proper shelter.
The Varahi Amman Temple was built during the Chola rule. These rulers were not only great conquerors but also great builders and administrators. They were patrons of art, and during their reign, they built some magnificent temples, including the Varahi Amman Temple. The premise has a shrine with the Vekkali Amman idol at the centre. The shrine is chariot-shaped and is made of silver and gold that the devotees donate. Inside the shrine, the idol is balancing on one leg with the other one on a demon. Since this posture needs a lot of strength, the devotees believe that she is the epitome of strength and power coupled with kindness and grace. The Temple is in the North direction, which is said to be the direction that gives victories.
The Chithirai festival is one major festival that occurs on the first day of every month. The priest performs the puja; ladies also perform the puja and guide the devotees for the glance of the Goddess.
Another festival happens in Aadi Month, during which the elderly ladies visit the Temple and perform a ritual for girls. They pray for their well-being and give them bangles and Prasadam.
Navaratri is also celebrated wholeheartedly, which occurs in Aani Month. This festival lasts nine days and nights, during which the devotees offer the Goddess many kinds of rice.
