Legend of the Trilinga Rameshwara Temple

Trilinga Rameshwara Temple

According to legend, Lord Rama is believed to have installed the Shiva Lingam here. Shiva is worshipped in the name of Bheemeshwara Swamy.

Sri Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita spent a short time here during their exile and bathed in the Manjeera River. With the influence of their Tamo guna, they sat at three different angles, made Shiva Lingams, and worshipped. Later, the villagers built a temple around the three Shiva Lingams. Ramapadalu is where Rama bathed, and the Tirtha became known as Ramatirthanga.

The Architecture of the Trilinga Rameshwara Temple

The Chalukyas built the temple in the 11th century, and later, Kakatiyas renovated it. The temple looks like a Shiva Lingam from all directions and is a notable architectural beauty. It was constructed only with stone; no cement or mud was used.

The Trilinga Rameshwara Temple is white and has a Mandapam before it. Visitors can see the temple's name in orange at the top of the wall. There are three Gopurams at the entrance, and the temple's name is also written over them in orange. A huge wooden door entrance greets visitors, with two female idols of the Kakatiya period on either side. There is a large, pillared Mandapam with beautiful carvings. The sanctum is next to the Mandapam.

Three Shiva Lingams, namely Rama, Bheema, and Soma, grace the sanctum. Inside the sanctum is a black stone idol of Shiva, Parvati, and Naga. A big Nandi is before the sanctum, giving the feeling of a real Nandi while touching it. Small Nandis are next to the big Nandi. In the morning, sunlight falls directly on the Shiva Lingam. Veeranna Gutta Hill is opposite to the Trilinga Rameshwara Temple. A pathway is available from this temple to the Hill.

One of the three Shiva Lingams was destroyed, and the temple replaced it with a Shiva Lingam from Kashi. The Manjeera River flows opposite the Trilinga Rameshwara Temple. From the top angle, the river looks like a Shiva Linga.

The Trilinga Rameshwara Temple has undergone various renovations since 1978, and alterations were made during King Kini's reign.
