Introduction to Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple

Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple is on the outskirts of Durki village, Nasrullabad Zone, Kamareddy district, Telangana. One of the Saptha Rishis, Durvasa Maharishi (Son of Atri Maharishi), resided in this village, which is how the village became known as Durki after Durvasa.

According to legend, during the Kakatiya period, King Somnath ruled the regions of Banswada, Kotagiri, and Varni. As the king had no child, he performed penance at the place where Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple now exists. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva appeared before King Somnath and bestowed him with progeny blessings. Hence, the king named his sons Someshwara. Someshwar III was believed to have built the temple.

The Architecture of Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple

Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple is entirely built of stone and faces the west. It is in the Dravidian architectural style. The presiding deity Somalingeswara Swamy graces the sanctum as Swayambu. The sanctum's Vimana is a prominent landmark with a four-sided pyramidal shape. Fifty years ago, the main Shiva Lingam was about fist size, and it has been growing every day. The temple has Parvati, Ganesha, Muruga, and Ayyappa idols around the sanctum. Several Shiva Lingams are in different shapes in the temple beside Ashtamukhi Lingam. The Naga statues are under a big tree. There are small Mandapams and Prakarams which provide space for rituals and gatherings.

Sri Somalingeswara Swamy Temple celebrates Shivratri grandly every year. It attracts hordes of devotees from its neighboring districts and Karnataka and Maharashtra. Devotees visit here every Monday and in Karthikai month to worship the deity.
