Sri Male Mahadeshwara Temple

The legend says that in the 15th century, Mahadeshwara lived here and performed penance. He is still believed to be here; he is the one who has a tiger as his mount and still lives in these hills.

There is a Temple of Male Mahadeshwara, which is in the Chamaraja Nagar District, Karnataka. He is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva; people here sing his glory in Janapada Style; the hill is about 3000 feet from sea level.

The place is one of the famous pilgrim centres of Lord Shiva, for which millions of devotees come here every year. The locals still discuss and enjoy the miracles performed by Sri Male Mahadeshwara.

Initially, the place was not safe for the regular public as it was dense enough. About six centuries ago, a saint came here to protect other saints from the bondage of a person named Shravana, who possessed black magic.

There used to be tribes living here who never interacted with humans. It is believed that the Lord later destroyed the black magic of Shravana and protected the saints from his grip. This area holds a lot of history. There are many such miracles that the Lord performed, and devotees can hear about them from the locals.

As people say, there are many Tamil songs as well; however, no needed effort was put into publishing those songs, and hence they were not known. Before 1956, the place was a part of Madras state; however, later, separate states were formed, and the Temple became a part of Karnataka.

People believe that the Lord once established a mutt here to look after the affair of the people living in this area. He made the hill tribes his disciples, and these people became the Archaks of this Temple.

Before 1953, the Temple was controlled and managed by Sri Salur Mutt and was handed over to Madras Government. Once the area was under the control of Karnataka, the Karnataka Government started managing the Temple.
