The Kanniga Parameswari Temple is on the busy MG Road in Pondicherry, Union Territory. The Chettiar community maintains the temple, and they are ardent devotees of Kali.
The spacious Kanniga Parameswari Temple features a blend of the French and Dravidian styles of architecture. The inner ceiling shows the beauty of the Dravidian architecture. Granite pillars support the inner ceiling with gorgeous motifs on them.
The temple's presiding deity is Kanniga Parameswari or Shakti, also revered as Kali. The sanctum enshrines an idol of Kanniga Parameswari adorned with jewels and vibrant garments and an imposing idol of Ganesha. The inner sanctum and the towers are in the Dravidian style of architecture. Other areas of the Kanniga Parameswari Temple have features of French design from colonial times. The temple's exteriors are very eye-catching.
It has arched walls, stained glass paintings, and stained glass windows in French style. The intricate designs, colorful pillars, and spacious courtyard attract the devotees. The walls are further beautified with the designs of heavenly creatures. Motifs and murals exquisitely decorate every inch of the temple.
The corridors and gardens surrounding the Kanniga Parameswari Temple provide a tranquil space for devotees to meditate and find solace in the divine presence. The temple pond is considered sacred and possesses purifying powers. Devotees take a dip in the pond to cleanse their sins and rejuvenate their spirits.
The Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple, and Chetty Pillayar Temple are near the Kanniga Parameswari Temple.
Navratri, Diwali, Pongal, and Aadi festivals are grandly celebrated here. The Kanniga Parameswari Temple receives a heavy footfall of devotees every Friday to worship the deity. It performs special Poojas on all Fridays in the Tamil month of Aadi. Cow Pooja is famous here. People also conduct marriages in the temple.
People offer the deity red sari, vermilion, turmeric, and lemon garland and seek her blessings for progeny, marriage, and a bright future.
