Legend of the Halu Rameshwara Temple

Halu Rameshwara Temple

The Halu Rameshwara Temple has an interesting legend. Sudati Devi, Maharishi Valmiki's wife, dedicated a diamond bracelet to the Ganga in Kashi. The same was found in this town, and the River Ganga started flowing there.

Seeing this, Maharishi Valmiki decided to stay there. He requested Ganga to grant the Prasad as per the fortune of the devotees. The milky water originated in this area. Thus, the temple and deity got the name 'Halu Rameshwar.' In Halu Rameshwara Temple, an idol of Sudati Devi, who was responsible for the emergence of Ganga, is also installed.

The Architecture of the Halu Rameshwara Temple

The Halu Rameshwara Temple is said to have been constructed during the 12th century AD. The temple is well-known for its unique architecture and intricate carvings. It reflects the Hoysala architectural style.

The temple has a sanctum, a closed hall, and an open hall. The shrine is made of stone and has a Shiva linga as the main deity. An idol of Nandi is on the bedstone. Visitors can first have the darshan of Mool Gangadevi and then have the darshan of Rameshwar.

There is an idol of Basavanna. Mass marriages take place in the newly constructed Samudaya Bhavan building.

The Halu Rameshwara Temple has two entrances - the primary and bigger entrance of the temple compound and one smaller entrance at the back. One can see the wishing well there.

Visitors can see a crowd of men and women around the wishing well for performing Pooja. The well is like a small pond in a rectangular shape. The source of water is from a natural spring inside the well. A wide marble stone pavement is on all four sides of the well. The walls of the Halu Rameshwara Temple are so close to the pavement that there is not enough space to move around the well freely. Devotees must climb down a few steps to reach the water level in the well. They can see an idol on a stone beam laid across the well.

Devotees visiting the Halu Rameshwara Temple can touch and worship the deity. There are Halurameshwar temple, Gangamate temple, Sriseetharama temple, Srimula Ganga temple, Sri Panchalingeshwar temple, Bedara Kannappa temple, and ancient Ashwathakatte.
