The Durgambika Temple has a rich history. Davanagere was a part of the Nolambavadi province of the Chalukyas. It was under the control of Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and finally, under the Vijayanagara kings. After the Vijayanagara Empire, Davanagere was under the Palayagar Nayaks for some time. Then, the Marathas ruled it. It was then taken over by Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and last by the Mysore Maharajas. During this time, Davanagere turned into a prosperous textile center.

The Architecture of the Durgambika Temple

The Durgambika Temple features the Dravidian style of architecture. The Temple is on the main road. People can park their vehicles outside. There is a Gopuram with the idol of Durga Devi. The outer walls have sculptures of Durga, Ganesha, and other Hindu deities.

The presiding deity, Durga Devi, is in the sanctum of the Durgambika Temple. There are many idols around the deity. All deities are decorated with flowers and jewels. Priests perform Poojas and Aarti to the deity.

It is believed that 200 years ago, a stone was brought from the Dugavatti Village, and people started worshipping it as Durga Devi. Later, in 1932, the beautiful Durgambika Temple was built. Durga Devi is the presiding deity known as Durgamma, Durgambika, and Durgavva.

Festivals in the Durgambika Temple

Durgambika Devi Festival, or Jatre, is the famous festival of the Durgambika Temple, held once every two years in March or April. This 10-day-long celebration attracts pilgrims and tourists in huge numbers.

Davanagere also houses Lingeswara and Subramanya temples, Kunduvada Kere Lake, Bathi Gudda Hill, and other tourist attractions.

Benefits of Worshipping at Durgambika Temple

It is believed that visiting the Durgambika Temple on Tuesday or Friday is auspicious. Durga Devi is believed to fulfill wishes, remove physical ailments, and bestow a successful married life for her devotees.
