Shahji Temple, one of Vrindavan's most popular tourist attractions, is in Nidhivan, Uttar Pradesh. Its stunning architecture attracts tourists from across the world. The Shahji Temple is also called Tedhe Khambe Wala Mandir (the temple with spiral columns) because of the presence of spiral columns.
The history of the Shahji Temple dates back to the 19th century. In 1876, wealthy jewelers and brothers Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Phundan Lal from Lucknow designed and built the Shahji Temple. The temple's main deity is Radhe-Krishna, who is lovingly called Chhote Radha-Raman. This white-colored temple demonstrates exclusive artistic craftsmanship, making it one of the most famous temples in the town.
The architecture of the Shahji Temple is different from the usual Hindu temple style. It features a blend of Mughal, Greek, and Hindu styles. The temple is built with high-quality white Italian marble. Among the temple's bespoke features are 12 spiral columns, each 15 feet high and 35 inches in diameter. Basanti Kamra, a Darbar hall, is another unique attraction of the Shahji Temple. It features Belgian glass chandeliers and paintings. Beautiful paintings on the ceiling and the hall's interior walls depict the stories of Krishna and Raasa Lila. The temple has a gorgeous fountain in the central area. Basanti Kamra is also known as the 'yellow room' because of its yellow décor. Priests open the room only twice a year, but it is still attractive from the outside.
The sanctum of the Shahji Temple houses the beautifully adorned Radha Rani and Krishna idols, which radiates a sense of peace. The ceiling has intricate paintings embellished with Belgian chandeliers that spread a warm glow on the entire sanctum. Shri Lalit Kishori Samadhi is near the Shahji Temple.
The Shahji Temple turns colorful during specific festivals. Janmashtami, celebrating Krishna's birthday, is a vibrant time to visit. Basant Panchami (January/February) and Jhulan Yatra (July/August) are other festivals. A unique hall within the temple complex called Basanti Kamra is open for viewing. This beautifully decorated Darbar hall, painted in yellow and adorned with colorful artwork, gives another dimension to the temple's charm.
