Introduction

The Law of Karma remains as the fundamental principle of Hinduism. Karma literally means action and the law of karma is nothing but the fundamental principle that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The result of every thought, word or action, good or bad, gets carried forward across several births that the individual soul takes, for it to face very similar consequences. Sins are the results of the vices and the evil committed by an individual in any birth, which that soul will face in in later births, whatever be the form it was born in. Sins cause distress and great sins can cause immense sufferings.

This sloka is in praise of mother Ganga or river Ganges. Ganga is regarded as the holiest of rivers and is worshipped by the devout as the mother Goddess. There are many sacred places of pilgrimage like Varanasi and Allahabad, that are located on her banks. It is a firm belief that a mere dip in the Ganges waters can wash away the sins of many previous births and lead one towards Moksha, the ultimate liberation.

It is believed that the chanting of this hymn with faith can relieve one of all forms of afflictions and sins.
