The Legend behind Garuda Panchami Sage Kashyapa had two wives, Kadru and Vinita. Kadru was the mother of a thousand snakes, whereas Vinita had only one son, Garuda. Garuda has a white face with an eagle’s beak, a golden body, massive red wings, and a crown on its head. Once, Kadru and Vinita laid a bet on the color of Uchaishravas’ tail. Uchaishravas was a flying horse with seven heads that emerged from the Milky Ocean, when the gods and demons churned it. Kadru asserted that the color was black, while Vinita claimed it was white. They agreed that the person who lost the bet would serve the other. Kadru told her sons, the Nagas, to cling to the tail of Uchaishravas, to make the horse’s white tail appear black. Vinita and Garuda had to serve Kadru and her sons, who began to ill-treat them. The Nagas said that they would free Garuda and Vinita if he could get them the divine elixir, Amrit, from Lord Indra. Garuda managed to steal the pot of Amrit from Indra and gained freedom for himself and his mother from the Nagas. However, Garuda nursed a grudge against them for their ill treatment and cheating. Vishnu was very impressed with Garuda as he did not take even a single drop of Amrit for himself. He told Garuda to ask for a boon. Garuda replied that he desired a position higher than Vishnu. Thus, he became Vishnu’s mount or vehicle. As per the Hindu scriptures, worshipping Garuda bestows victory and 8 kinds of Siddhis or occult powers.
