Legend of Tirupattur Brahma Temple

According to mythology, Brahma was proud as he was the creator of the Universe. He felt he was more powerful than Shiva as he had the power of creation. His pride angered Shiva, and he destroyed Brahma's fifth head. Also, Shiva cursed Brahma to lose his power of creation. As Brahma realized his blunder, he sought forgiveness from Shiva. So, he went on a pilgrimage to Shiva temples to relieve his curse. Brahma visited this place during his pilgrimage and installed 12 Shiva Lingams around Brahmapureeswarar. He worshipped Shiva here for a considerable time.

Brahma's prayers pleased Shiva. He gave him Darshan under the Magizha tree. Thus, Shiva freed Brahma from his curse.

Shiva also restored Brahma's power and responsibility for creation. He also blessed Brahma that he would have a separate shrine at Tirupattur Brahma Temple. Shiva also advised that as Brahma had his destiny rewritten here, he should do the same to his devotees visiting Tirupattur Brahma Temple.

The Architecture of the Tirupattur Brahma Temple

The Tirupattur Brahma Temple is over 1000 years old. During ancient times, the name of the place was Tirupedavur. It is believed that the temple might have been constructed during the Vijayanagara reign, from the 15th to 16th century. It features the Dravidian architectural style.

The temple has a beautifully decorated five-tier Raja Gopuram. One can see a beautiful Dwaja Sthambam (flagstaff) at the entrance, and Nandi, the divine vehicle (Vahana) of Shiva in the Veda Mandap. Next follows Nadha Mandap, which has seven musical pillars.

Brahmapureeswarar in the form of Swayambu Lingam blesses from the sanctum sanctorum. Next to him, Devi Brahmanayaki (Brahma Sampath Gowri) shrine is located.

The seven entrances enclose the presiding deity in the sanctum sanctorum. Each represents a day of the week. As natural light falls on the Lingam on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of Panguni, it appears very bright on these days. Devotees can see and worship the presiding deity from the entrance. A doorway to the right in the first prakaram leads to Nandavanam (temple garden).

Navagraha shrine is before the Nandavanam entrance in the second prakaram. In the inner prakaram of the Tirupattur Brahma Temple, there are separate shrines for Vinayaga, Surya Deva, Guru Bhagawan, Dakshinamoorthy, Kala Bhairava, and Gajalakshmi, and Chandikeswarar. A Sarabeswara idol is installed in the entrance hall.

One of the special features of Tirupattur Brahma Temple is that devotees can worship 12 Shivalingams installed and worshipped by Brahma here.

Devotees can worship the idol of Brahma in the meditative pose sitting on a lotus in a separate shrine. His idol is 6 feet high and completely covered with turmeric. In the inner praharam of the Tirupattur Brahma Temple, people can see the shrine of Brahma.

Sthala Vriksham of the temple is the Makizha tree. Brahma Theertham, Shanmuga Nadhi, and Bahula Theertham are the temple's Theerthams.
