Introduction

Thiru Arimeya Vinnagaram Temple is a Vishnu shrine. ‘Hari’ or ‘Ari’ is Vishnu, and ‘Meviya’ or ‘Meya’ is residing, and thus, this place remains as one ‘where Lord Vishnu resides.’ The Azhwar saints have sung about the greatness of the deity here, and hence, this temple is counted among the Divya Desams, the chosen abodes of Vishnu. This temple is located in Thirunangur village, near Sirkazhi town, in the Mayiladuthurai district of the Tamil Nadu state. Kudamaadukoothan is the principal deity here, and this place of worship is more famous as the Kudamaadukootha Perumal Temple. Vishnu’s consort Lakshmi is worshipped here as Amirtagadavalli. This temple also remains among the 11 Divyadesams of the Thirunangur region, known as Thirunangur Tirupathi. These temples are closely associated with the saint-poet Thirumangai Azhwar, who belongs to this belt.

Temple Legends

Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram Temple

The legends of all the eleven Thirunangur temples are closely linked to one another. On the death of his consort Goddess Sati in her father Daksha’s sacrifice, Lord Shiva, the God of destruction, became inconsolable and overcome with fury and grief, started dancing wildly at this place. While he danced, his hair locks began touching the ground, and every time it happened, it gave rise to 11 new manifestations of Shiva. This became a reason for worry for the celestials, as this might wipe out the creations and living beings, and may have a deep impact in the cosmic scheme of things. On their request, Lord Vishnu appeared before Shiva at this place, and this subsided Shiva’s anger. And Shiva is also said to have requested Vishnu to reside here in 11 forms, as it happened in his case. Vishnu obliged and presented himself in 11 forms in and around this place. All the 11 places he appeared became temples, which now form the cluster of Thirunangur Tirupathi. This is also the shrine where Sage Uthanga is said to have performed penance. As per some legends, Vishnu descended in this place only at the request of Shiva.

The Architecture of Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram Temple, Thirunangur

This modest-looking temple is built in the Chola architectural style and was patronized by the Nayak Kings, subsequently. Located amidst the lush green paddy fields, the temple Rajagopuram is three-tiered, while the sacred tank is to the north of this temple. In the main shrine, Lord Krishna is in a seated position, keeping his legs on a pot. ‘Kudam’ is the pot, and this gives the name Kudamaadukoothan, ‘the dancer with the pot,’ to the principal deity. His is a ‘sudhai’ image made of stucco, and hence no sacred bath with water is given to him. Instead, only aromatic oil is applied to the deity. Vedamodha Vimanam is the tower above the sanctum. Lord Gopala is the festival deity, and his consort is Amruthakadavalli.

Temple Festivals

The prime festival of this temple is Thirumangai Azhwar Mangalaasaasana Utsavam, celebrated during the Tamil month of Thai (January-February). The festival deities of all the 11 temples are brought in their Garuda mounts to Thirunangur on the occasion. The idol of saint Thirumangai Azhwar is also brought here from the temple at Thiruvali-Thirunagari, and the hymns that he composed on these deities are recited with devotion. This is a grand celebration that draws devotees in their thousands, year after year.
