Introduction

Thanjai Mamani Koil refers to a cluster of 3 temples, all dedicated to Vishnu. Together, these temples are counted as one Divyadesam, the sacred abode of Vishnu that has been glorified in the hymns of the Azhwar saints. These are situated in the historic town of Thanjavur, in Tamil Nadu, quite close to one another. Veera Narasimha Perumal, Neelamega Perumal, and Manikundra Perumal are the presiding deities of these 3 temples, and their consorts are Thanjai Nayaki, Sengamalavalli, and Ambujavalli. These temples are collectively called Thanjai Mamani Kovil.

Temple Legends

Thanjai Mamani Koil

As per the legend Brahmanda Purana, 3 demons Thanchaka, Dhantaka, and Gajamuka obtained many boons from Shiva through severe austerities, became very powerful, and started troubling sage Parasara, who was doing penance here, and others. Heeding to the appeal of the harassed sage and others, Vishnu is said to have taken the form of the mighty Narasimha and slew Thanchaka. And at the request of the dying demon, this place got its name as Thanchakanur, which later became Thanjavur. Dhantaka was killed by Vishnu, who took the Varaha form that of the wild boar to finish off the demon. And the Lord is said to have come as the mythical creature Yali and put an end to the other demon, Gajamukha. After the successful annihilation of the demons, the Lord is believed to have appeared as Neelamega Perumal to sage Parasara.

Different versions of the same legend are there, too, with details like the names of the demons, how they were killed, etc. differing slightly from one another.

The History and Architecture of Thanjai Mamani Koil, Thanjavur

These temples are widely believed to belong to the Chola times and have been patronized by the Cholas, Marathas, and Nayak kings, over time. Lord Veera Narasimha appears in the seated posture in his sanctum sanctorum, and his well-crafted image looks majestic. He is found placing his hand on an elephant, which is said to be none other than demon Thanchaka. Sridevi and Bhoodevi, his divine consorts are there on either side of Veera Narasimha, while sage Parasara also finds a place there. Demon Hiranyakasipu and devotee Prahlada are there, too, in the sanctum. The divine Chakra, the discus weapon of the Lord, contains his image, and hence, Chakrathazhwar darshan assumes special significance here. Apart from the principal deity, 4 more Narasimhas are also found at various places in the temple. These are the Yoga Narasimha, Lakshmi Narasimha, Abhayavaradha Narasimha, and Kambhaththadi Yoga Narasimha. There are also separate shrines for Goddess Mahalakshmi, Lord Hayagriva, and Parasara. The Utsavar or the processional deity is portrayed holding a Sengol, the royal staff of authority. With its intricate carvings and stucco images, the temple remains rich in craftsmanship.

The other two temples of the Mamani Koil are also nearby. Abhishekams, the holy bath with water, is not performed for the main deities in these temples, and instead, Thailakappu, that is, aromatic oil is applied on their idols.

Temple Festivals

Brahmotsavam, the grand annual festival, is celebrated in the 3 temples in the 3 consecutive Tamil months – Panguni (March-April), Chittirai (April-May), and Vaikasi (May-June). Garuda Sevai also remains one of the other important festivals of these temples.
