Legend Of Swami Koragajja Temple

Swami Koragajja Temple

It is said that Koraga Thaniya lost his parents at a very young age. He was only an infant when he lost his mother. His father passed away when he was a child. Hence he was left alone and started his journey in the South direction. He would sit under a tree, and due to hunger, he would eat sand as rice. He used to cry sometimes because he was lonely.

Once Bairakke Baidyedi and their family passed through that tree and saw Thaniya. They then came closer to the child, but he ran away out of fear. However, when they enquired about the child and gave him clothes, he started to cry. Bairakke Baidyedi felt compassionate toward the child and wanted to know more about him. The child told them the whole story and how his parents died.

Bairakke Baidyedi then told the child to come with them and that she would treat him like their children. The child agreed to go along and went home. Bairakke Baidyedi noticed that after taking the child home, their business flourished. The child also learned to make baskets, bamboo stuff, and other handmade and began selling them.

One day, Nema was organised; the coconut leaves and banana plants were allocated to carry from Bairakke's family. However, there was no one to lift all these leaves and plants. There were at least 7 people required to lift such a heavy weight. However, Thaniya agreed to carry these leaves alone on the condition that he would have the food for all 7 people.

After eating, he went on to the temple. Thaniya did it because Bairakke fed him like her own child. Thaniya felt grateful toward his mother, and he carried the weight to the Temple in this devotion.

The Temple chief saw Thaniya from a distance and told him to keep the leaves near the Temple. He also told Thaniya to stay away from the Temple as he belonged to the lower community. Thaniya spoke, but his words were unheard. Standing near the Temple, he noticed a tree with fruits. He then remembered that his mother was asking for fruits to make pickles.

Thaniya then tried to climb the tree, but he was unable. So he put one foot on the Temple's kalasha.

At this moment, the Temple's Divine got furious and vanished Thaniya. This is how he attained divinity. Later, he was worshipped as Koragajja or Neecha Daiva throughout Tulunadu.
