The Muktyala Shiva Temple is known as Sri Kotilinga Hari Hara Mahakshetram, situated on the northern bank of the River Krishna, Muktyala village, Jaggaiahpet, Andhra Pradesh. Visitors can see the fort of Muktyala King by the side of the Temple, which is not open to the public. Sri Kotilinga Swamy temple is left to the Muktyala Shiva Temple. The ancient Muktyala Shiva Temple is 10 Km from Jaggaiahpet city.
During the Treta Yuga, Sage Bharadwaja established a hermitage here. He used to take a holy dip in the Krishna waters. Sage Bharadwaja performed severe penance and attained salvation here. Hence, the place is named Muktyala. As the River Krishna flows here, it is known as Uttaravahini. Due to its sacredness, the place is called Uttarakasi. Once, a couple of Nandieeswara were seen here.
Devotees believe there is a golden Shiva temple in the depths of the river water. The great Rishya Srunga Maharishi performed severe penance in the nearby cave. The chanting sound of Sama Gana came from the cave, and it is written in Brahmanda Purana.
It is said that Shri Rama and Lakshmana in Treta Yuga and the Pandavas in Dwapara Yuga visited the temple. The Satavahanas and many kings visited the Muktyala Shiva Temple.
Bali Chakravarthi built the Muktyala Shiva Temple. Kamakshi Sameta Sri Pancha Mukha Amrutha Lingeshwara Swamy is the presiding deity of the Muktyala Shiva Temple. The deity has four faces on four sides, and one of his faces is Urdhva Mukha. Four Nandis are facing the Shiva Linga on four sides. The temple has a five-storey Vimana. There are four entrances to the temple. The temple has four Dhwajasthambams on four sides and on either side of the main shrine. There is a big Nandi in the Muktyala Shiva Temple.
Shat Ganapati and Shat Subramanya temples are in the temple complex. The Muktyala Shiva Temple has 108 sub-temples; Venkateswara, with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi, is also seated here. Devotees can see a huge Shiva idol on the temple premises.
Dwadasa Jyotirlinga temples are on the eastern side of the temple. The temple has a target to achieve the installation of one crore Shiva lingas. The specialty of the Muktyala Shiva Temple is that all devotees are allowed to install Shiva Lingas here at a normal fee. All Prathista items are included in the charges.
Jagadguru Shri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Mahaswamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham visited the Muktyala Shiva Temple in 1946. It is under the management of the Endowment Department.

The Muktyala Shiva Temple remains open from 6.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm.
