The Karmanghat Hanuman Temple, or Hanuman Temple, is one of the oldest and famous Hindu temples in Hyderabad, Telangana. Sri Jagannath temple, Ujjaini Mahakali temple, Balkampet Yellamma temple, Sri Chilakur Balaji temple, and Golconda Fort are near the Hanuman Temple.
According to the temple legend, once, Raja Pratap Rudra, a Kakatiya ruler, was hunting in the forest. Feeling tired, he sat down under a tree to rest. While resting, the king heard someone chanting Rama's name. He was tempted and tried to find who it was.
When he started walking further into the forest, he discovered an idol of Hanuman. The stone idol of Hanuman was in a sitting posture, and the voice was coming from it. Having seen this, the king paid his respects and returned to his place. Hanuman appeared in his dream that night and asked him to construct a Hanuman Temple.
The Hanuman Temple was constructed soon, and the succeeding kings of the Kakatiya dynasty ruled and preserved it well. Four hundred years later, King Aurangzeb ordered his armies to destroy all Hindu temples.
However, his armies could not even enter the compound wall of the Hanuman Temple. After learning this, Aurangzeb destroyed the temple with an iron bar. When he reached the temple premises, he heard a rumbling voice, and the instrument slipped from his hands as fear overwhelmed him. Then, the king heard a thundering voice from the heavens, warning him not to destroy the Hanuman Temple.
During the 12th century, the Kakatiya ruler Raja Pratap Rudra II built the Hanuman Temple. It bears the vernacular style of architecture and faces the East direction.
The temple’s Garbhagriha Gopuram was constructed in 2003. The first Gaali Gopuram (wind tower) was built in 2007. In 2017, the first Raja Gopuram was constructed. A huge Satyanarayana Swamy Vratha Mandap was built in 1999. Visitors can see several idols of deities sculpted on the temple walls. A black marble stone carries the story of the Hanuman Temple and is placed in the temple area.
Two tall Dhwaja Sthambams are present in the premises of Hanuman Temple, which were earlier used as Deepa Sthambams. Visitors used a pulley system to lift the oil lamps to the top of the Deepa Sthambams.
"Dhyana Anjaneya Swamy" is the temple's presiding deity in a sitting posture. It also houses shrines of Rama, Shiva, Saraswati, Durga, Santoshi Mata, Venugopala Swamy Navagrahas, Bhramaramba Sametha Spatika Lingeshwara, and Jagannath.
Hanuman Jayanti, Sri Rama Navami, Ugadi, Krishna Janmashtami, Diwali, and Maha Shivratri are the main festivals celebrated with great splendor in the Hanuman Temple.
The Hanuman Temple celebrates Hanuman Jayanti with special Poojas. Large numbers of devotees come here to worship the deity on his birthday. Also, weekly Tuesday and Saturday prayers and rituals are performed to Hanuman. The Hanuman Temple also provides "Anna Daanam," or free meals to needy people on all days of the year.
