The British East India Company demolished it in 1757 to provide a clear view from the port. Due to public protest, the British East India Company donated land and money to Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar to build the new Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple in 1762. He built Chenna Malleeswarar temple along with Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar also donated a sum of 5202 pagodas for the construction of these temples. The French and Tipu Sultan invaded the original temple. The temple priests took the idol of Chenna Kesava to Thiruneermalai temple and, by mistake, brought down the Utsava deity of Thiruneermalai temple.
