As per the Bonthapally Veerabhadra Swamy Temple legend, many years ago, there was only a small temple of Veerabhadra Swamy in the village. When a shepherd was passing the temple at night, he heard a voice and turned around.
He was shocked to see Veerabhadra Swamy. He told the shepherd that he did not like the temple's location and wanted it to be shifted. Veerabhadra Swamy asked the shepherd to carry him on his shoulder to another location till he got tired. Following his instructions, the shepherd carried Veerabhadra Swamy to Bonthapally.
After reaching Bonthapally village, Veerabhadra Swamy asked the shepherd to go home without turning back, or he would become a statue. However, the shepherd turned back and became a statue there. This statue remains there in the village.
