What is Saraswati Pooja

Saraswati Pooja is an important Hindu festival, which is celebrated to worship the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Goddess Saraswati is the epitome of all learning, and she is the natural source of art and art forms. Many students, professionals, artists, musicians, and scholars worship Goddess Saraswati to reach newer horizons of wisdom, artistic and technical skills, and academic brilliance. During Navaratri, Saraswati Pooja is celebrated with great significance. Navaratri is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, not only in India but across the globe, where Hindus are gathered in large numbers.

History of Saraswati Pooja

Saraswati Pooja is celebrated on the ninth day of Navaratri (nine nights of goddess worship). It holds a great significance as it is an indication of triumph over evil. Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, killed the demon Mahishasur and got the name Mahishasuramardini. Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, had found his weapon on the day of Vijayadashmi from the Shami tree which was hidden in it 13 years ago before he went on exile. Arjuna ’s victory in the Kurukshetra war occurred on Vijayadashami. Since then, Navrathri is celebrated to commemorate the Goddess, the real force behind the seamless functioning of the world. The entire Navrathri is dedicated to Goddess worship. The ninth day is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, and the tenth day is Vijayadasami, the day of victory.

Significance of Saraswati Pooja

Goddess Saraswati is the foundation of all knowledge, skills, technology, and art. Hence worshipping her with piety and conviction will help to hone the knowledge, abilities, talents, artistic and technical capabilities, and academic performance. Saraswati Pooja is powerful to bestow the power of judgment. It wards off confusions and afflictions from the mind. It will enhance clarity of thought and the ability to foresee the risks associated with a particular plan. Many people start their new ventures on this day, considering it a highly auspicious day to start it.

Saraswati Pooja is celebrated with enormous piety and devotion. People would wake up early in the morning and take a bath with sacred leaves like Tulsi, and Neem dunked inside the water. Some people apply the paste of Neem and turmeric all over their body. This has excellent medicinal effects. Wearing white clothes on that day is said to auspicious. The entire home is then cleaned spotless. The Pooja room is decorated with flowers and other beautiful decorations.

A statue or picture of Goddess Saraswati is adorned with a garland. A Kalash is set up which is made of a copper pot containing pure water along with fragrant materials and spices. Then, a bunch of mango leaves inserted from the top of the Kalash, along with a coconut is placed on it. The entire Kalash is then decorated with a fragrant mixture of special powders and oils.

Then a special feast is offered as a Prasad, and devotional hymns and prayers are sung for the entire day. Many people would fast on the day, and restrain from having spicy food. The whole day is celebrated with enormous love and devotion.
