Kala Bhairava Ashtami, also knowns as “Bhairava Jayanthi” or “Mahakaal Bhairavashtami” signifies the birthday of Lord Bhairava, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. This ceremony falls on the eighth day of the lunar phase in Krishna Paksha (Waning Phase of Moon) in the Tamil month of Karthigai (Oct – Nov). The day is considered more special when it falls on Sunday or Tuesday, as these days are dedicated to Lord Bhairava.
Kala Bhairava Ashtami is a time for rigorous and strict religious custom especially of God Kala Bhairava to connect with eternal powers. Bhairava is the ferocious form of Lord Shiva and he controls and guards the intrinsic points of the Universe. There is a total of 64 Bhairavas grouped into 8 categories, each headed by one Bhairava. The 8 major Bhairavas are called as “Ashtanga Bhairavas”. They control the 8 directions of the Universe.
According to Puranas, once Lord Brahma grew very egoistic and considered himself the most supreme power among the trinity (Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma). Lord Shiva felt insulted by Brahma’s comments and wanted to teach him a lesson. Then Lord Brahma has five heads and Lord Shiva ordered Kala Bhairava to cut off his fifth head. In a moment, Bhairava severed his head which stuck to his nail. This can be seen in every Bhairava idol as a skull stuck to his nail. Kala Bhairava’s vehicle is a black dog and Raahu Kal on Sunday (4.30 PM – 6 PM) is considered the auspicious time to worship him.
On this occasion, Kala Bhairava along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is worshipped with fruits, flowers and sweets. Story of Lord Shiva and Kala Bhairava is recited with fervor and dedication all night and perform the light offering (Aarti) at midnight. Keeping fasting on this day is believed to remove all hurdles from one’s life. As dog is Bhairava’s vehicle, people feed dogs with milk and food.
Invoking Kala Bhairava during Krishna Paksha (Moon Waning Period) through Kala Bhairava Mantra, Kala Bhairava Pooja or Kala Bhairava Homa is the surefire way to ensure enormous benefits.
