Introduction to Ashadha Gupta Navratri

Ashada Navratri, also known as Gupt Navratri or Varahi Navratri, is a nine-day celebration of the Goddess Durga in all her forms. It is observed in the Tamil month of Adi (mid-July to mid-August) during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon). The devotees who perform this pooja seek the blessings and power of Goddess Durga. As she is also termed as the' Goddess of the night'- she is mostly worshipped after sunset or before sunrise.

Significance of Ashadha Gupta Navratri:

Ashadha Gupta Navratri

On our life's journey (sadhana), we may sometimes lose our energy and focus, and hence we need a revival. This fasting and prayer help us root out the causes of distress in life, and we use her strength to overcome all obstacles. By following the rituals, singing hymns and reciting mantras (religious texts) we are bestowed with wisdom both worldly and spiritual and alleviated from stress while enhancing our positive energy.

Goddess Durga is also known as Sakthi, and hence worshipping the Goddess and performing pooja during this time is said to alleviate a lot of problems or difficulties a person may face in their life, be it financial, physical, spiritual, marital or materialistic.

The Mythology of Ashadha Gupta Navratri

In the South, we celebrate Varahi Pooja. The Puranas(scriptures) say that Varahi was created from Varaha. She is the female counterpart. Goddess created the Matrikas from herself, and when she went into battle to fight the demon Raktabija, Varahi is seen fighting alongside her to defeat him and all the other demons.

Goddess Varahi has a boar form with eight hands, her weapon of choice is a discus(chakra), and she fights with a sword. Varahi is worshipped by four major practices of Hinduism: devotees of Shiva, devotees of Brahma, devotees of Vishnu, and those who worship the goddess -goddess worship. She is usually worshipped at night, using secretive practices (tantric practices)

Rituals followed on Ashadha Gupta Navratri:

A strict fast is followed by the devotees. Those who cannot fast completely can also observe a partial fast of consuming satvik (clean pure) food like potatoes, curd, and fruits. This is followed by chanting hymns and praying to the Goddess. Before the start of the celebrations, the house is cleaned to welcome the Goddess in their home. The fast is broken on the ninth day, and the Prasad (offering) is consumed along with other members of the family.
