What is Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is one of the most widely celebrated festivals among Christians, which honors Jesus’ resurrection from death. The Easter date is variable but it always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, according to the Gregorian calendar. For the Roman Catholic Church it is always on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. This happens on the third day from the day he was crucified, which happens to be called Good Friday. The entire week is observed as the Holy Week by Christians and they abstain from meat and alcohol. Easter is celebrated as the end of the Lent period and aims to spread the message of joy and happiness among all the people across the globe.

History of Easter Sunday

Easter Celebrations may have their roots in Paganism. Easter may fall on different dates each year. Instead, it is commemorated on the first Sunday after the full moon of the vernal equinox. Some people connect “Easter” to the Teutonic goddess of fertility and spring, “Eostre.” In Pagan religion, eggs represented fertility and birth. This was probably the inspiration behind the Easter egg.

Easter is also connected with an ancient spring African carnival, celebrating the resurrection of the husband of the “Great Earth Mother Goddess.” This resurrection had occurred 2000 years ago and is said to have close similarities with the modern day Easter.
