Sri Mangaleeshwarar Temple – Idaiyatrumangalam
“Mangalyam” means Thali, a chain that is worn by married women in India. It is also called Mangalsutra. The groom puts it around the bride’s neck when they get married.
The temple is near Lalgudi, a place that lies around 22Kms from the Trichy bus stand. Unmarried women born under the Uthira star or Nakshathra worship at this temple to remove the hurdles to their marriage. Here, the deity is a divine rishi whose name is “Maangalya Maharishi.” He, too, was born under Uthira Nakshatram. He is the guru of all gods or Devas and blesses them with Akshathai or turmeric-coated rice when they tie the knot. He is also the person who determines the auspicious time for the marriage. He prays to Lord Maangaleeswarar daily to boost his power.
Women who need his blessings for a speedy marriage light a Ghee lamp in front of the Rishi’s idol. Once the marriage alliance is fixed, the woman will submit a marriage invitation at the divine feet of Mangalya Maharishi, thereby inviting him to grace her marriage. In fact, it is the Rishi who gets the first invitation to the wedding!
Sri Vedapureeshwarar Temple – Thiruvedhikudi
The Mangaiyarkarasi sametha Sri Vedapureeshwarar Temple is in Thiruvedhikudi near Thiruvaiyaru. The main deity is Lord Shiva, who has the name Vedapureeshwarar or Vazhaimadunathar, here. Vazhaimadunathar means ‘’the Lord who appeared from a plantain field’.
As per the Sthala Purana, a demon or Asura grabbed the Vedas from Lord Brahma and dived deep into the sea. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Matsya (a big fish) and retrieved the Vedas from the sea. Since the Vedas had been in the custody of the demon, they became tainted and got a dosham. To remove the dosham, all the Vedas did penance towards Lord Shiva in this holy place. Because all the Vedas performed penance or tapas here, this sthalam came to be known as “Tiru Vedhikkudi,” and Lord Shiva got the name “Vedhupureeswarar”.
Mangaiyarkarasi is the Goddess here. Her name means ‘queen of all women’. Women who wish for a good husband make offerings of saris and Thalis and also Sandana Kappu to the Goddess. Those who suffer from Kuja or Chevvai Dosha (which causes marriage delays) come here and perform Abishekam for Lord Subramanya. This helps to reduce the effect of the Dosham.
The hymns of Shaivite saints like Thirunavukkarasar and Gnana Sambandar make it clear that this is a remedial temple or Dosha Nivarthi Sthalam for delayed marriages. After the marriage, the newly married couple will visit the temple to express their gratitude and perform a special Pooja.
Sri Sishta Guru Natheshwarar Temple – Tiruthalur
Sivaloka Nayagi sametha Sishta Gurunathar temple is in Tiruthalur in Cuddalore district. The primary deity is Shiva, who is in the form of a Lingam. He has the names Sishta Guru Natheshwarar / Thava Neri Aaludayar. His consort is Goddess Poongkodhai / Sivaloka Nayaki.
According to the Sthala Purana, Saint Sundarar was on his way to Tiruthalur from Thiruvennainallur, As the Thenpennai river was flowing in between, he was not able to reach this place. So he sang a Thevaram about Shiva from the riverbank. Impressed by the song, the Lord and his consort appeared before him in the guise of an elderly couple. They also helped Sundarar to cross the river using a small boat. Once they reached the opposite shore, Shiva hid himself, and Sundarar was unable to find him. Then an old man came there and told Sundarar that the person he was looking for was above him. Then, Sundarar saw Lord Shiva and Goddess Ambika on a bull on the temple gopuram. Sundarar begged Shiva to teach him how to do penance. So Shiva taught him at this place. Hence, he got the name Sishta Guru Nathar / Thava Neri Aaludayar.
There is another Sthala Purana about this place. It says that when Shiva married Parvati in Mt. Kailash, he told Sage Agasthiyar to travel to the South to balance the earth (everybody had moved to the North to see the wedding). As he traveled, Agasthiyar installed Shiva lingams and idols of Goddess Ambika at various places on his route. Here too, he installed a Shiva Lingam facing the West direction and an idol of the Goddess facing the North direction (as the wedding took place in the North). The North facing idol of the Goddess is very rare.
This place is also a Guru sthalam where special Poojas are done for Shiva and Guru Dakshinamurthy to nullify Marriage Doshas. People who seek marriage boons come here, light ghee lamps, and do Vilva Archanai for seven weeks. They believe that this will get rid of the marriage Dosha and their marriage will occur soon.
Sri Kalyanasundareshwarar Temple – Thirumanancheri
Kokilambika Sametha Sri Kalyanasundareshwarar temple is in Thirumananchery in Nagapattinam district. ‘Thirumana’ denotes ‘marriage, ‘cheri’ means ‘village’.
It’s here that Lord Shiva married Parvati. As per the Sthala Purana, Goddess Parvati was under a curse and had to take the form of a normal person on earth. She lived in sage Bharata Muni’s ashram as his daughter. The sage approached Shiva and asked him to marry his daughter. Accordingly, his wish came true in this place.
In another Sthala Purana, the Lord took the form of Dakshinamurthy, the form of deep meditation. Manmadhan, the God of Love, shot his arrow at Shiva. The angry Shiva opened his 3rd eye and reduced Manmadhan to ashes. Manmadhan’s wife, Rathi Devi, begged Shiva to revive her husband. Shiva relented, and he was restored to her in this sthala.
The main attraction at this temple is the sight of the Lord who stands hand in hand with his consort in the pose of a newly married couple. Lord Kalyanasundarar is the bridegroom, and the Goddess stands next to him, head bowed, shyly looking at his feet.
People who seek marriage boons visit the temple and perform special Pooja for the Lord and the Goddess. For the Pooja, one needs 2 garlands, 2 coconuts, turmeric, kumkum, banana, lemon, camphor, ghee, betel leaf and betel nuts. After entering the temple, one has to light 5 ghee lamps in the Deepa mandapam. The priest will perform the special Pooja for the Lord and his consort, and when it ends, prasadam is given. The lemon and the garland are part of the prasadam. One has to make juice with it, sans sugar or salt, and then consume it. The garland has to be kept in the Pooja room. After the marriage is fixed, the couple will visit the temple once more with the garland and offer it in the temple tank.
Panchamukha Narasimhar Temple – Mayiladuthurai
Lord Narasimha is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He took this fierce form to save his devotee Prahlad and kill his evil father, the demon, Hiranyakashipu. Panchamukha Narasimha has five faces. At this temple, people who face delays in marriage and childbirth, as well as those who face problems in married life, come to worship and make offerings to the deity. It is in Thiruvidamaruthoor near Mayiladuthurai and is one of the Divyadesams. It can supposedly nullify Chevvai Dosham in a person’s horoscope.
