Shani Bhagavan is the son of Surya (Sun God), and Chhaya, the Goddess of shadows. He is seen as the physical manifestation of the planet, Saturn, and is also the Lord of Saturdays or Shanivaar.

Shani Dev is one of the 9 Navagrahas in Hindu astrology, and the God of justice and karma. He is the brother of Lord Yama, the God of death. While Yama settles karmic debts after a person’s death, Shani settles them during the person’s lifetime. He has two sisters, Yamuna, and Putri Bhadra, and two brothers, Vaivastahva Manu and Manu.

 Some believe that he is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who gave him the responsibility of handing out the results of people’s karma. In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Lord Krishna says that among the planets, he is Shani, while displaying his virat rupa to Arjuna,.

Origin Story of Shani 

The story of Shani’s birth is found in the Skanda Purana. Surya’s wife, Swarna or Saranyu, was the daughter of Vishwakarma, the divine architect. Unable to bear his intense radiance, she went away to meditate and left her shadow, Chhaya, in her place without telling Surya.

 When Chhaya was pregnant with Shani, she performed severe penance for Lord Shiva. She fasted for days, standing in the Sun without any shade. This affected the child’s color; he was born with dark skin. Surya was not pleased when he found that his son had none of his radiance.

Shani was a great devotee of Shiva and considered him to be his guru. He had Shiva’s blessings and the penance done by his mother gave him many divine powers. When Shani was born, the Sun went into an eclipse.

 Shani was angry when his father, Surya, insulted him for his dark complexion. Due to Shani’s rage, Surya’s chariot stopped, and his body became dark. Shiva intervened and asked Surya to make amends for his mistake. Surya agreed and regained his glory.

 Beliefs and Rituals Around Shani

Shani was born on Vaishakha Vidya Chaturdashi Amavasya. It is celebrated in May every year as Shani Jayanti or Shani Amavasya. People perform the Shani Shanti Pooja, read the Shani Chalisa, and perform Tailabhishekam on Shani’s idol. They also donate black clothes, sesame or mustard seeds, sesame oil, or mustard oil, as it is very auspicious on this day.

 Most people are afraid of Shani. If his gaze falls on people, it supposedly  brings many problems for them. But in truth, Shani is the God of Karma and punishes only those who do evil deeds.
