Introduction - Panguni month:

According to the ancestors, there are some times, which is considered not auspicious to perform marriages. They always felt that Panguni is not an auspicious month to perform a marriage. Many people would attribute different reasons. Spiritual reasons, and also scientific reasons combined into it, to prevent people from getting married. Birth charts, positive positions of the planets and other important factors are verified for the positivity of the marriage. Along with the month of Panguni, Aadi month is also not suitable to perform the marriage.

The month of Festivals:

This is a special month were different celebrations are taking place in various parts of India. It is celebrated as Holi in North India. Panguni Uthiram is highly celebrated in Lord Murugan’s temples, even at home, many people will have a lot of Puja and fastings. It is the same month where Lord Ayappa, the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Thus along with the festivals of Holi, and Panguni Uthiram, it is celebrated as Basant Panchami in Andra Pradesh, Ganga Mela in Uttar Pradesh, Manjal Kuli in Kerala and Dol Purnima in Bengal.

The Month of celestial weddings:

Apart from the festivals, it is the time of celestial weddings, where a lot of Gods and demigods got married. Panguni Uthiram is one of the prominent days and the most celebrated festival. It is the time where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, got married. It is the same month where Lord Murugan and Goddess Devayani got married. Goddess Andal and Ranganatha united on this special month. The divine marriage between Lord Rama and Goddess Sita happened on this deific month.

Socio-Economic Reasons:

There are several attributes like finance and farmining where conducting a marriage is highly prevented during the season of Panguni. Since India is mainly a country of Farming, the second harvest is expected during this season. It would be the time where the entire family would be concentrating on the yields, and the financial situation would be tight. The farmers would like to engage more people to work, which requires a lot of money. Thus giving their focus to farming would benefit them a lot.

Climate:

It would be a monsoon season where a lot of wind is expected. The entire month would be vulnerable to small communicable infections. Thus it was prevented to have a celebration like a wedding, which requires a lot of decorations and mainly cooking in the open spaces were a lot of hassles. Thus, to avoid these problems, the marriage was prevented.

In olden days, whenever the month is not suitable for performing marriages , there would be a lot of festivals and celebrations related to temples, and other religious ceremonies, where the people are kept occupied throughout the month. Since the month Thai is very auspicious, many people would have performed the marriages during that time of the month. Thus a marriage to sustain and have a good period, it is important to have a positive period during the time of marriage.
