Thai Poosam: 

Thai Poosam is a day that celebrates Lord Muruga. This also marks the day when Goddess Parvati presented “Vel, one of the powerful weapons, to Lord Muruga, her son. It is celebrated on Saturday, 8 February 2020. It is regarded as the time where all the Gods, demi-Gods, and people show their gratitude for destroying the demon. Thai is a Tamil month, and Pusam is a star, thus when the star coincides with the month of Pusam, the festival is celebrated in a grand manner. This is not only a festival which is significant across Tamilnadu but is also an important festival where there are a lot of Tamil Settlements across the globe. 

Power of Vel:

It is a saying in Tamil which says “Vel Undu Vinai Illai,” which translates to where there is Vel, there would be no evil. It is specially crated with mystical powers, where a lot of power has been amassed by the lance. It is also believed that no other force could withstand the onslaught of Vel. When there was a great war between Lord Muruga and Demon Kraunchan in the form of a large mountain, Lord Muruga used the Vel, and it broke the mountain in two pieces with just a single stroke. Lord Muruga split the demon Surapadma into two using his special Vel.  

Vel is a metaphor. The top portion of the Vel is in the shape of a teardrop, where the handle is lengthy. The top of the Vel is compared with the brain, and the stem portion compared with the spinal cord. The power of Vel is massive. ‘Kadir Vel”, the amulet with a lot of divine rays, and great illumination can dissolve the illusion of a man is split seconds. According to Vedic Sciences, the enemy of a man is not outside, but inside. It is important to cleanse the mind to be free from negative thoughts. Thus a perfect meditation towards Vel would liberate from all Karmic forces. 

Temple of Sikkal:

Soora Samharam is an important festival, which marks the destruction of the demon Soorapadman. It was in the temple of SIkkal, near Nagapattinam, Goddess Parvathy, gave an amulet to Lord Muruga. It is believed that the idol of Lord Muruga exactly sweats a lot while getting the powerful amulet from his mother. This incident of sweat from the idol is also witnessed even now. 

Festival of Thai Poosam:

Thai Poosam is a ten-day festival in Palani temple, where “Thirukalayanam,” the divine wedding, is celebrated on the day before Thai Poosam. Not only in India there are many countries which celebrate this festival in a grand manner. Singapore, Malasia, temples in the United States, Canada, Srilanka are some of the countries which celebrate this festival in a grand manner. 

Significance of Thai Poosam:

During Thai Poosam, Lord Muruga is highly radiant, and his entire power has been continuously coming from him. It is believed that, when people worship him during this time, all their problems will vanish. They will get comprehensive protection from their enemies. The forces of Karma and the rebirth would vanish. If they show their devotion, Lord Muruga will protect them.
