Mars, the red and fiery planet in the solar system, is also called Kuja, Angaraka, and Mangal. It is one of the important planets in Vedic astrology. It signifies energy, action, and desire. When it’s favorable in your birth chart, it gives you courage, determination, and willpower. But when afflicted, Mars makes you impatient, aggressive, and easily frustrated.

In Hindu Mythology, Mars is called Bhoomi Putra, meaning ‘son of Mother Earth’. Mars is also associated with Muruga or Kartikeya, the god of war. When Earth was submerged in the cosmic ocean, Vishnu as Varaha (boar) lifted it on his tusks and brought it out of the ocean and placed it in a suitable orbit.

Mangal is said to be the son of Varaha and Bhumi (Earth).

Mars is the Commander-in-Chief of the celestial bodies, and rules over Samveda. In Western Astrology, too, he is the deity of War and hunting. He rules over disputes and destruction.

Mars’ nature is dry, fiery, and masculine. He is the ruler of the zodiac signs, Mesha (Aries) and Vrischika (Scorpio). Mars is exalted at 28 degrees in Makara or Capricorn. It is debilitated in Cancer or Karkata at 28 degrees. Its Mooltrikona Rashi is Aries.  Mars has high stature and a blood red color. Mars signifies our desires and ambition.
