Significance of Sankatahara Chaturthi

dateOn March 14, 2025

Sankatahara Chaturthi is a day that is important for the worship of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity who removes obstacles. It is also called Sankashti Chaturthi. Ganesha is also the god of wisdom, good fortune, and prosperity. Ganesha devotees believe that this day has great spiritual and cultural significance. It falls on the 4th day of Krishna Paksha every month. ‘Sankatahara' means ‘one who removes difficulties’.  On this day, Hindus worship Ganesha, seeking his divine intervention to overcome challenges in life.

Legend behind Sankatahara Chaturthi

Hindu mythology talks about the origin of this observance. A popular myth about it involves Sage Narada and Ganesha. It says that Narada advised a king named Suryanarayana to observe this vrat/fast as it could remove all the hurdles and problems in his life. The king took his advice and to his great relief and delight, he was able to overcome all his problems. He believed that it was due to Ganesha's blessings.

Since then, people have been observing Sankatahara Chaturthi with great devotion, hoping that it will remove the hurdles and challenges they face and fulfill their wishes.

 Rituals of Sankatahara Chaturthi

On Sankatahara Chaturthi, people observe certain rituals while worshipping Lord Ganesha. They are given below.

 Observing Fast (Vrat)

Devotees observe vrat/fast on this day from dawn to sunset. Some observe a partial fast, taking only fruits or milk. Vegetables and root plants can also be eaten. Many prepare peanuts, potatoes and sabudana khichdi as well. The fast ends only after the main Pooja is completed. Fasting on this day purifies the mind and soul and enables one to connect with the divine. It also enables self-examination and spiritual progress. The fast ends with the sighting of the Moon. Then they perform Ganapati Pooja.

 Ganapati Pooja

Ganapati Pooja is an important ritual on this day. Devotees perform Pooja to Ganesha by offering fresh flowers, garlands, Durva grass, incense sticks, and sweets like Laddoos and Modaks/Kozhukattai (a sweet dumpling that Ganesha is very fond of), fruits, and a coconut. The Pooja takes place in the evening after the Moon becomes visible. People light lamps and read the "vrat katha" relating to the month in which the Chaturthi falls.

 Chanting Mantras

Devotees chant Ganesh Slokas and Mantras during the Pooja. This is believed to increase the power of the prayers. Ganesha Ashtothra, Sankashtnashana Stotra, and Vakrathunda Mahakaya are chanted on Sankashti Chaturthi.

 Sighting the Moon

The Moon has great significance on this day. Once they complete the Pooja, devotees wait for moonrise. After sighting the Moon, they end the vrat. People worship the Moon also on this day. They offer water, chandan (sandalwood paste), rice, and flowers in the Moon’s direction.

 Distributing the Prasad

After the Pooja, food offered during the worship (prasad) is distributed among friends and family. This signifies the sharing of Ganesha’s blessings.

 Spiritual Cleansing

The practice of fasting helps instill self-discipline and self-control. This enables one to focus on the divine and their spiritual goals. Fasting cleanses us spiritually. The day is very auspicious for spiritual practices. It encourages self-reflection, and encourages people to repent past mistakes, and seek personal growth.

 Overcoming Challenges

Sankatahara Chaturthi is the ideal day to invoke Ganesha’s blessings for overcoming challenges in life and removing obstacles that hinder our progress. Whether the challenges are personal, professional, or spiritual, devotees believe that Ganesha will answer their prayers on this day and deliver them from suffering. There is also a belief that observing it can help reduce malefic astrological influences and increase positive energies in one’s life.

 Builds Stronger Community Bonds

Families and communities unite to celebrate this festival. This helps build good bonds between people.

 Conclusion

If you are facing struggles in life due to obstacles and challenges, Sankatahara Chaturthi is the right time to enlist divine support to get relief from your problems. By observing fast and worshipping Ganesha on this day, all hurdles will vanish, and your life can become smooth.
