dateOn May 10, 2025

A powerful aspect of the Divine Mother, the Hindu Goddess Pratyangira Devi, is known to bestow Moksha (liberation) and free one from all karmas. She represents justice, truth, and Dharma. She is mostly worshipped by the Kshatriyas, a warrior race of India. Devotees believe that she can ward off misfortunes and problems caused by black magic. She blesses one with great power and energy. Pratyangira Devi can destroy evil forces and demonic forces. This powerful Goddess supposedly tamed Sarabheswara’s (a fierce form of Shiva) arrogance. Another name for her is Narasimhika, as she is half-lion and half-human. She is associated with Sri Chakra. She protects devotees from harm and puts them on the right path. People do Sadhana to her to repel evil forces and gain prosperity. Pratyangira is depicted as having a dark complexion and a ferocious appearance. With a lion’s face and red eyes, she radiates fierceness. Her mount is a lion. She is either completely nude or in black attire. On her neck is a garland of human skulls. She has 4 hands in which she holds a trident, a hand drum, a snake in the form of a Paasa or noose, and a skull. The Goddess is described in the Atharva Veda as Bhadrakali. So she is also called Adharvana Bhadrakali. Since she protects us by residing within ourselves and destroys our enemies by suffocating them, she got the name Nikumbhila. After the killing, Narasimha became very bloodthirsty and refused to calm down. Some great sages requested Lord Shiva to take the form of Sarabha (a bird-like creature that could eat even lions and elephants) to calm Narasimha. Shiva prayed to Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Using their combined powers, he became Lord Sarabeshwara. One of his two wings represented Shoolini, while the other was Pratyangira.

However, on seeing Sarabha, Narasimha became more ferocious and turned into Ashta Muhka Ganda Berundha Narasimha, an 8-headed form. After Sarabheshwara and Shoolini failed to control Ugra Narasimha, Pratyangira appeared from his wing in the female form of Narasimha and managed to calm him. Pratyangira was 1000 times bigger than Sarabeshwara. Her head rose above the clouds, and her feet were in the underworld. She had 1000 lion faces, 2000 red and protruding eyes, 2000 hands with many weapons, and 1000 blood-stained tongues lolling out of her mouth.
