The mountain dissolves ego-based intelligence. Ego identity is the source of our limitations: envy, jealously, insecurity and anger. Indeed ego is simply ones insecurity, but a hard one to dissolve. The mountain is reputed for its special ability to subdue even the ego of Gods.
Thousands of gallons of oil are lifted to the mountain top by humans huge barrels. On the day of the Krittika star when the Sun is in Scorpio, a special light splashes dissolving karma for the entire earth plane. Only sages can see the light. To replicate this spiritual happening a huge lamp is lit on the top of the mountain with several thousands of gallons of oil, hand carried by pilgrims coming from all over India.
As soon as the lamp is ignited on top of the mountain, an eagle always appears and circles the mountain. This eagle is considered the messenger from God to Bless the earth plane. TV channels from around the world converge on this divine site to witness this event.
This time of the year is the monsoon. But the rain stops on this day quite miraculously.
What is this Mountain Arunachala (Sanskrit) / Thiruvanamallai (Tamil) ?
This mountain is called the mountain of fire. Fire symbolized light, consciousness and intelligence. Ramana Maharishi who lived on the mountain for most of his life says that the mountain can still the thought process and liberate human beings.
The mountain has existed in all the ages in different forms. In this Kali Yuga, it is a mountain made of rock, yet it has the same power to change the destiny of people. You don't even have to come in person. Just think about the mountain or look at a picture of the mountain, you will be liberated from sorrow and suffering.
The mountain is the personification of the feminine. As such it is a vortex that promotes gender relationships. Relationships is what makes life meaningful on the earth plane. This is the lesson that the mountain teaches to everyone who comes to look at it.
Foreigners from the West have found a second home, and some even a permanent home, at the foothill of Thiruvanamallai. There is a magical power that attracts the spiritual people to this sacred place.
Numerous saints and seers have lived in these hills that meditated upon Lord Shiva and received special boons. Currently, there is an on-going nature project to re-forest sections of these sacred hills.

Last year I was with the Astroved group during the feeding program. Nearly 5 hours we fed thousands and thousands of people. There were young and old people who stood in long queue to receive the food. The Grand Deepam Light Shines for the Benefit of the Whole World
Karthigai Deepam has an important association with Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva presented himself as a huge pillar of fire to intervene in a conflict between Vishnu and Brahma when each God wanted to prove he was the most powerful. Shiva challenged them to find the beginning and end of the pillar. He said that whoever found the end or beginning first, would win and be considered the most powerful. Neither was able to win the contest, and so both realized that the pillar of fire was Lord Shiva himself, who is in fact infinite.
On Deepam night, countless invisible siddhas and saints visit the vortex along with the human pilgrims. These invisible enlightened beings visit the Earth plane during this auspicious time to bless those who are walking and to empower their prayers for the world.
On the Deepam day, worshipping Lord Shiva will annihilate the three human impurities: egoism, selfishness and delusion.
