What is Amavasai and how is it observed?

Amavasai or Amavasya is the New Moon Day when the Moon is hardly visible, that falls once or twice in every English calendar month. It is one of the most powerful days to offer Tarpanam (ancestral rituals) to honor our ancestors to help their souls attain Moksha (salvation) and to receive their blessings. The day has a unique divine energy to transcend the worldly life and to awaken spiritually.

How planets help receive the blessings of the day

This time the Bhadrapada Krishna Amavasai is falling on a Wednesday, 19 August 2020, although the Darsha Amavasai starts on Tuesday, 18 August, 2020 itself from 10:39 am onwards. Hence, Tuesday and Wednesday are both considered Amavasai days. On both these days, the Moon is placed with the Sun and Mercury in the sign of the Sun, Leo.

On Tuesday, 18 August 2020, the Moon, Sun and Mercury all are in the auspicious and victorious Magha Nakshatra (ruled by Ketu). Ketu is with Jupiter in Sagittarius, hence, it is a double blessing and we can change our destiny for good by praying to our ancestors and our Gurus. The Day Lord Mars is in its Moolatrikona Rasi, Aries, so luck and success can favour us. On Wednesday, 19 August 2020, the Sun and Mercury remain in Magha, whereas the Moon moves to Purvaphalguni. Magha Nakshatra is all about power, wealth and magnificence, it is ruled by Ganesha and also linked to our Pitrus (Ancestors). Hence, these Amavasai days will be great days to offer Tarpanam to our ancestors and to pray to Ganesha and request Him to remove all obstacles on our path to progress in both material and spiritual life. God and ancestors can improve our mental and communication skills so that we attain success. When the Moon moves to Purvaphalguni Nakshatra on the 19th, praying to our ancestors can help us attain wealth and luxury, since, it is ruled by Venus. The Prajanana Shakti of the Nakshatra can bring us all sorts of riches, comforts, name and recognition.

The Bhadrapada Krishna Amavasai day is considered to be very auspicious and powerful to reduce our sins caused from the mistakes committed by us towards our ancestors. Rituals to ancestors on these two days can protect a person’s entire kith and kin and can bless children to those who are childless. Today is believed to be the day that our ancestors (Pitrus) visit us today from Pirtuloka (realm of ancestors) to bless us and to forgive us for our sins. Performing Tarpanam and offering them food can get us rid of our ancestral debts and sins and can make us attain their blessings.

The Sun signifies the father and soul; whereas the Moon signifies the mother and mind, this day is of great importance because the Sun and the Moon occupy Leo, the sign of the Sun. Performing Tarpanam today will free you of debts and financial burdens, bestow longevity, happiness, fame and success at home and at work. Both the maternal and paternal ancestors can bless us this time.
