dateOn December 22, 2025

Vaikunta Ekadasi is an auspicious day for Hindus, especially the followers of Vishnu (Vaishnavites). It is celebrated in the Margazhi month of the Tamil Calendar, which falls in mid-December to mid-January. On this day, devotees fast, stay awake the entire night and chant Vishnu Sahasranamam and Vishnu Ashtotharam. It is considered a powerful day as Vishnu’s prosperity-bestowing energy is at its highest. On this day, the Vaikunta Dwaram, the Gates of Heaven (Vishnu’s abode), is believed to be open, and you can invoke His transformative energy to enhance harmony, prosperity, abundance, liberation and to remove karmic debts. The day also has the power of Ekadasi Shakti, revered for clearing negativity and sins. Vaikunta Ekadasi 2025 is on Tuesday, December 30.

Lord Vishnu resting in cave as Ekadasi Shakti emerges to slay demon Muran during Vaikunta Ekadasi 2025 legend from Padma Purana.

Legends and Significance Behind Vaikunta Ekadasi

The mythology behind the Vaikunta Ekadasi celebration is explained in the sacred text of the Padma Purana. According to it, a demon called Muran was troubling all the Devas in heaven. Unable to withstand the trouble Muran gave, the deities went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu fought Muran and realised that the demon had a boon, that he could be killed only by a female energy or a new weapon. Vishnu decided to take a rest in a cave. When he was resting, Muran tried to kill him, but a female energy emerged from him and, with a mere glance, she burned the demon to ashes. This energy was called Ekadasi, and pleased with her actions, Lord Vishnu granted a boon. Ekadasi asked that those who fasted on the day should get Vishnu’s blessings, be rid of past sins and attain Moksha. Vishnu agreed.

Spiritually, Muran represents arrogance, greed and lust in people. When people destroy these negative characteristics in themselves, it is akin to killing the demon Muran inside them. After removing all the bad qualities, positivity increases and helps people achieve success in their endeavours.

Vaikunta Ekadasi is celebrated for another auspicious event: the Bhagavad Gita discourse to Arjuna by Lord Krishna during the Kurukshetra War was delivered for the first time on this day.
